Charges laid against teens in fatal Fredericton stabbing
Two teenage boys appeared in court Sunday and were charged in the fatal stabbing of a 71-year-old man in Fredericton on Friday night.
One 17-year-old has been charged with second-degree murder and another 17-year-old is charged with manslaughter. Their identities are protected under the Youth Criminal Justice Act.
Officers responded around 11 p.m. Friday to a report of a fight on Union Street and found the senior critically injured, Fredericton police said in a news release Saturday.
The victim, now identified as Mark Albert Brooks of Sitansisk, was taken to Dr. Everett Chalmers Regional Hospital, where he later died.
Police arrested three teenagers, including one who had fled the scene. A 15-year-old was released.
"Police were able to quickly determine the sequence of events in detail and promptly lay charges against the two youths," Fredericton police said in an updated news release.
"This was made possible with the help of witness statements and video evidence provided by local establishments."
