A man was left terrified after finding a hidden room in his house – and the frightening thing that lurked within.

The bloke said he was moving into a new duplex when he discovered a crawl space spanning the length of the property. He decided to investigate but became suspicious when he realised the door to the room was kept closed "20 giant screws".

It made him wonder what sinister things could be lurking on the other side. He said on Reddit: "[It] kinda made a chill run up my spine. So I'm sitting there in this little closet with tension building the whole time.

"It took a couple of minutes to take them all out. The door was painted onto the trim, and I had to give it a little boot to break it free."

The door eventually gave way to reveal something terrifying on the other side – a "little green guy about 4ft tall with stitches across his face" standing on the other side. He added: "I threw the impact drill, fell over, and about s*** myself all in one uncoordinated motion."

After taking a moment to calm down, he realised the item was a Halloween decoration left there as a prank by one of the property's previous owners. Reddit users were quick to respond to the find, with many seeing the funny side while others said they had had similar experiences.

One user said: "That is absolutely hilarious, patient long-game comedy. It could have gone decades before being discovered. Oh my God, that is actually hysterical The foresight to do it, I can't cope. The person must have been laughing their a*** off closing it all up? The creepy little smile." Another person added: "Oh my god, I would have died."

While a third chimed in: "I moved into a new house and ended up with a bedroom that had access to the roof space. Thought I’d check it out. Right at the top of the ladder was a single chair with a child’s doll sitting in it. I almost fell down the ladder. I sent all my housemates up one by one for the same experience."
