RCMP in Prince George, B.C., say they are investigating after a man was found with a gunshot wound at an encampment in the city.

Police say they were called to an area known as Moccasin Flats, at 8:30 a.m. PT Friday after reports of a gunshot.

There, they found a man suffering from what they described as a "serious" gunshot wound.

Several RCMP vehicles and paramedics arrived at the scene shortly after.

RCMP Cpl. Jennifer Cooper said the man was taken to hospital. She did not describe his condition.

The Serious Crimes Unit is now investigating the incident, and police say they will be onsite at Moccasin Flats throughout the day. Police are asking the public and residents of Moccasin Flats to stay out of the area while they are investigating.

"Unfortunately, in instances where we have a police incident in an area with high density housing, we may have to move people from nearby locations," said Cooper.

"[Moccasin Flats residents] will be allowed back when the area is safe and the investigation is complete."

Cooper says that because the investigation is in its early stages, there is no information yet on possible risk to the public.

Anyone who was nearby between 8 a.m. and 8:30 a.m. PT are asked to contact Prince George RCMP.
