A man who deliberately ran over another after they had a fight in a brothel has been jailed. Corley Cadby was involved in a 'scuffle' with another male at an 'adult entertainment venue' in Digbeth in the early hours of September 23 last year.

They left through separate exits but the victim and his friend ended up walking down Oxford Street where the 31-year-old defendant had returned to his BMW. CCTV captured Cadby pull out and drive towards the two men.

One of them dodged out of the way but the car hit the other male who appeared to trip and stumble as he tried to escape. The BMW ended up mounting his body and he suffered multiple broken bones including his skull, ribs, spine and shoulder.

His injuries were described as 'grave' and the victim emotionally described how he now struggled to hold his one-year old daughter. Cadby, of Parkfield Drive, Castle Bromwich, admitted inflicting grievous bodily harm with intent and was sentenced to seven years and ten months at Birmingham Crown Court yesterday, Tuesday, June 25. An original charge of attempted murder was dropped by the prosecution.

He was also banned from driving for four years from the point of his release, which will be after two-thirds of the sentence. Daniel Oscroft, prosecuting, said the victim and his friend had been out in the early hours of September 23 when they went to the adult venue on Oxford Street, where Cadby and his friend had also gone.

He said: "At 5.20am there was trouble between the victim and the defendant, the two pairs of men. Words appear to have been exchanged and they were involved in a scuffle which didn't last very long.

"Both separated and left shortly afterwards. CCTV seems to show both leaving from different exits.

"Unfortunately for (the victim) the route he chose to leave was back along Oxford Street. The two of them by coincidence had gone in the direction Mr Cadby had gone to get back in his car."

He continued: "When Mr Cadby got in his car and the lights go on and off again. He started his car and drove towards him and his friend walking on the pavement. The defendant drove deliberately at and then over (the victim). The car can be seen to rise and fall as it goes over his body."

Cadby fled the scene while the victim was taken to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital. Both his lungs had collapsed and he had suffered fractures to his cheek, skull, ribs, sternum and shoulder while his pelvis was misaligned.

In a statement the victim described being reliant on painkillers as well as the embarrassment of having to be helped to have a wash. He said he had to re-learn how to walk again, could not carry on his job in construction and could not play any sport, which he liked to do several times a week.

Explaining the difficulties he now had caring for his daughter he added: "I struggle to pick her up and hold her. Even just interacting. I used to get on the floor and role around with her and play with her. It's the little things I can't do anymore."

West Midlands Police issued an image of Cadby in a wanted appeal and he was arrested on December 28. He has previous convictions for assault, public disorder, burglary, supplying cannabis, criminal damage and driving offences.

James Hay, defending, read a letter from Cadby which said: "I am writing this to let you know how sorry I am for the awful mistake I made. It was a spontaneous, stupid decision which I fully regret. I'm going to have to live with it.

"It ended up far worse than I could have imagined. I wouldn't wish it to happen to anybody. What's happened is completely out of character. I'm not a violent person at all. I just wasn't thinking straight."

Judge Paul Farrer KC concluded Cadby used his car has a highly dangerous weapon and acted out of 'revenge'. He also accepted he had shown genuine remorse and his lengthy imprisonment was going to affect his son.
