A man has been ordered to pay £1,000 in compensation to three assault victims after violence flared in Wishaw town centre.

Shea Summers, 25, of Ansdell Avenue, Blantyre, appeared at Hamilton Sheriff Court this week following the attacks in Stewarton Street on December 30.

Summers admitted shoving a woman to the ground then punching her and striking her repeatedly on the head and body.

He also admitted punching two men.

An allegation that Summers struck a third man on the head with a glass bottle at the nearby Cross Keys Inn was dropped.

Defence lawyer Kevin Corr said alcohol had played a significant part in his client's behaviour but stressed that he "hadn't gone looking for trouble".

Mr Corr added: "He is in full time employment and supports his wife and two children. He would be in a position to pay a financial penalty."

Sheriff Louise Gallacher said Summers had carried out a "sustained" assault on the woman and ordered him to pay her £600 in compensation.

He must also pay the two men £200 each. Summers agreed to pay the compensation within five months.
