A man has been jailed after being convicted of 57 counts of historical child sexual abuse. Gary Bennett, 61, of Shenstone Close in Bromsgrove, received a 28-year prison sentence, with a minimum term of 18 years behind bars, at Worcester Crown Court on Wednesday, May 8.

The abuse spanned over a nine-year period, taking place across various locations including Leominster, Bridgnorth, Kidderminster, Stourbridge, Habberley and London. The police were first alerted to the abuse in May 2018, prompting an immediate investigation.

In total, there were seven victims - six boys and one girl - all of whom were children or teenagers at the time of the abuse. The crimes committed by Bennett include rape, attempted rape, buggery and indecency with a child.

Inspector Julie Taylor, who spearheaded the investigation, commented: "This has been a long and complex case and I'm pleased that Bennett's victims have finally been able to see him face justice. The abuse he subjected them to is absolutely sickening and will undoubtedly affect them for the rest of their lives.

"I don't underestimate the immense courage it took for the victims to come forward, and I'd like to commend them on their conduct throughout. Despite numerous delays in court proceedings, they have remained patient, dignified and determined.

"I'd encourage anyone who has been a victim of sexual assault, whether as an adult or child, and whether recent or not, to get in touch with us. You will be taken seriously and you will be listened to."
