While most people opt for brushes or rollers when painting a fence, one man has taken to TikTok to demonstrate how using a sponge can be a superior method. Known as @reno_at_95 on the social media platform, he posted a video of himself applying paint to his garden fence with a sponge.

He showed viewers how simple it was to use a sponge, resulting in a quicker technique and outcome. A standard-sized sponge is sufficient, but ensure it's fairly large to achieve enough coverage.

This method is not only cheaper and faster, but it also prevents any paint bristles from sticking to the fence. Rather than dabbing the sponge on the fence, the video demonstrated the user smoothly applying the paint, using a small amount at a time.

The TikToker captioned the video "Fence painters out there - use a sponge not a brush! You can thank me later". The video garnered over 300,000 likes and numerous comments from users who were pleasantly surprised by this hack.

User @sandyfloyd195 wrote: "I've been thinking of painting my fence. I think you just saved me a lot of time! Thank you! " while @mrsfpringles said: "I always use a sponge now. It works so fast. @jamorobo3 replied: " @jamorobo3 replied: "Mind officially blown! That's game-changing.", reports the Express.

Another user, @sophiee276, commented: "This is incredible. I've just tested it out and it takes seconds to paint the fence now."

Sponges can be purchased for as little as £2 for a pack of five, costing just 40p each.

BandQ suggests a convenient method for painting a fence is to use a sprayer. They stated: "If you're using a paint sprayer, check the paint is compatible."

It's necessary to take precautions too as they further added: "Ensure you wear a dust mask and goggles, and make sure you've covered the areas surrounding the fence properly, as there will be a little bit of overspray."

They gave advice regarding the number of coats needed saying: "Some fence paint will only require one coat, however, some fence paint will require two to three coats."

Lastly, they reminded DIYers about drying time: "Make sure you check the tin to see the recommended number of coats and to see how long it will take for the paint to dry."
