A man remains in hospital with stab wounds to the neck after police were called to reports of an assault near a church in an Oxfordshire village.

Nearby homeowners said they first heard police sirens in Berinsfield near Wallingford last night (Wednesday, June 26) at around 9.20pm before a forensic tent was seen on the green area next to the St Mary & St Berin Church car park in Green Furlong.

One eyewitness, who asked to remain anonymous, said the cordon on the road was still in place at 2am today (Thursday, June 27) admitting the incident had “scared" her children.

She added that the cordon behind the church, which is opposite the parade of shops on Fane Drive, had been removed by the time they had woken up at 6.30am.

Villagers also took to social media after the incident with reports of multiple police cars and ambulances parked by the flats near the church opposite the Co-op.

Thames Valley Police confirmed a man had been taken to hospital with an injury to his neck and remains there at this time.

An investigation into the incident is ongoing, said the force.

A Thames Valley Police spokesperson said: “Thames Valley Police received a report of an assault with injury at around 9.19pm yesterday evening (Wednesday, June 26) at Fane Drive, Berinsfield.

“A man sustained an injury to his neck and he was taken to hospital where he remains at this time.

“Officers are investigating the incident."

District councillor Robin Bennett, who represents Berinsfield, has also been contacted for comment

The Green party councillor said he was not aware of this incident when we approached him this morning.
