Manchester United have reportedly been dealt a blow in their pursuit for Benfica star Joao Neves.

United have plans to strengthen their midfield with the club likely to say farewell to Casemiro this summer. Neves is highly rated in Portugal and is one of the most promising central midfielders in Europe.

In addition to United, Liverpool also have the 19-year-old as a target. However, a new report by Portuguese newspaper A Bola claims that Paris Saint-Germain have joined the race for his services after recently making an enquiry.

Despite their approach, the French giants are yet to make an official offer. It is said that Benfica were left with the impression that they may come back with an offer 'very soon.' Neves is claimed to have become the 'priority' for football advisor Luis Campos who is well familiar with the player.

But it remains to be seen whether PSG will meet Benfica's asking price as president Rui Costa has previously made it clear that the club will not entertain any offers below £84million (€100m). The Portuguese giants have reportedly rejected a £51m bid from United in the past.

Benfica are determined to keep hold of their academy product with boss Roger Schmidt planning to build his team around the midfielder next season. Neves has a £102m (€120m) release clause inserted in his contract that is valid until 2028.
