Manchester United vs Villarreal - LIVE!

Twenty-four hours after Lionel Messi’s stunning first goal for PSG lit up the Champions League, Cristiano Ronaldo wrestled back the headlines as his stoppage time winner gave Man United a much-needed three points at Old Trafford on Tuesday night.

Having lost their group stage opener to Young Boys, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side were staring at a second successive defeat after Paco Alcacer gave the visitors a deserved lead soon after half-time.

Alex Telles struck back with a magnificent volley from Bruno Fernandes’ clever free-kick, but United were still facing the prospect of sitting bottom of the group after a third of the fixtures had been played.

However, Ronaldo, who had been quiet all evening, popped up at the back post in the 95th-minute, firing home to send Old Trafford into a state of pandemonium.

Here’s more from Bruno Fernandes...

“It is always difficult to play against Spanish teams. They are good on the ball and we know that coach is here in England already. They played good football and were organised in defence.

“But I think we do a good job. Sometimes we have to be patient and not press all the time. The main thing was the three points.”

“That’s what happens here at Old Trafford, it’s happened so many times before. Of course, we had to throw caution to the wind and we got lucky in the end.

“Sometimes its not about pass there and pass there it’s the crowd, the Stretford End has sucked a few balls in before, I know that and that’s probably what happened. When you’ve got Cristiano on the pitch you’ve always got a chance.

“Seriously, he’s so good in front of goal and he has an impact on everyone, the crowd, the players, the whole club.”

Bruno Fernandes has been speaking to BT Sport...

22:43 , Malik Ouzia

“I always had the feeling we could win the game. And when they scored I felt we could come again and turn it around.

“After the goal of Alex [Telles] the push from the fans was unbelievable. Some amazing saves from David [De Gea] to keep the score at 1-1. Then at the end, strikers have that feeling to score and Cristiano helps us again.

“We finished with two strikers and we know any ball in the box they will be alive to it. We know they can score at any moment and that is why we continue with crosses. We are happy with three points.”

A crazy finale. Old Trafford is rocking. We’ll bring you all the reaction as we get it.

FT: Man United 2-1 Villarreal

21:56 , Malik Ouzia

My, oh my, they needed that.

GOAL! Man United 2-1 Villarreal | Cristiano Ronaldo 90+5'

21:53 , Malik Ouzia

He’s won it!

He’s had a pretty poor night, but Cristiano Ronaldo has won it. Terrific from Lingard to keep the ball alive at the back post and Ronaldo thumps in from the tightest of angles.

21:52 , Malik Ouzia

90+3 mins: Brilliant save!

Rulli makes a cracking one-handed stop as Lingard gets a toe to Ronaldo’s cross at the near post.

21:49 , Malik Ouzia

90+1 mins: There’ll be five minutes of added time...

21:47 , Malik Ouzia

89 mins: Finally those changes are made - Telles and Greenwood are the two men to make way.

21:46 , Malik Ouzia

86 mins: How’s this stayed out?!

De Gea’s first mistake of the night as he parries straight out to Die but he makes up for it with a second save that I’m not sure he knows much about and then Telles makes a block, too.

21:43 , Malik Ouzia

84 mins: Here comes another United change - Jesse Lingard is stripped and ready, and it looks like Fred will be joining him, too.

21:38 , Malik Ouzia

79 mins: What a chance!

Brilliant from Greenwood, a superb first-time cross from the right that takes the ‘keeper out of the equation but Cavani heads wide!

21:34 , Malik Ouzia

75 mins: Pogba and Sancho are the two men to make way, with Ronaldo now shuffling over to the left and Matic joining McTominay at the base of midfield so it’s more of a 4-2-1-3.

21:32 , Malik Ouzia

74 mins: Edinson Cavani is about to enter the fray for United. I’m stunned it’s taken this long for Solskjaer to turn to his bench.

Nemanja Matic is imminent, too.

21:27 , Malik Ouzia

68 mins: He’s a busy man now, the referee. Albiol and Greenwood both see yellow for cynically halting counter-attacks heading in either direction.

21:26 , Malik Ouzia

67 mins: Yeremi Pina is the next man into the book for a clip on the heels of Telles. Moments after that Telles strike Jadon Sancho had a great chance to put United ahead but lost his footing.

GOAL! Man United 1-1 Villarreal | Alex Telles 60’

21:19 , Malik Ouzia

Stunner!

It was always going to take a moment of magic because United have not been at the races and this is certainly that. Bruno Fernandes clips a free-kick to the edge of the box where Telles does his best Paul Scholes impression to meet it on the volley and lash into the far corner.

21:15 , Malik Ouzia

57 mins: Bruno Fernandes is the driving force for United at the moment and just about the only one as he makes space for a shot but hammers it a few feet wide.

21:15 , Malik Ouzia

57 mins: Bruno Fernandes is the driving force for United at the moment and just about the only one as he makes space for a shot but hammers it a few feet wide.

GOAL! Man United 0-1 Villarreal | Paco Alcacer 53’

21:12 , Malik Ouzia

There’s the goal they deserve!

No surprise at its source either as Danjuma gets the better of Dalot for the umpteenth time tonight and crosses for Alcacer to poke home. United in trouble.

21:10 , Malik Ouzia

52 mins: Better from Greenwood, who had a pretty quiet first-half, as he bursts down the right and drills low to the front post but Albiol is well positioned to clear.

21:09 , Malik Ouzia

51 mins: Edinson Cavani’s just been sent out to warm-up.

21:08 , Malik Ouzia

48 mins: McTominay goes down clutching his stomach after what looked a pretty innocuous collision with Danjuma off the ball. The Villarreal man is laughing about it. The United man is not.

KICK-OFF!

21:04 , Malik Ouzia

We are back underway...

20:56 , Malik Ouzia

Make no mistake about it, United are very fortunate to be on terms at the break. It wouldn’t surprise me to see a change from Solskjaer at the interval here, perhaps Jesse Lingard to inject a bit of energy.

HT: Man United 0-0 Villarreal

20:47 , Malik Ouzia

Plenty of work to do for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer at the break. His side have been poor.

20:45 , Malik Ouzia

43 mins: That would have delighted the home fans. Former Liverpool man Moreno stretches to cut out Pogba’s superb dinked ball in behind and steers it past his own ‘keeper but just wide of the post.

20:44 , Malik Ouzia

42 mins: What a chance. Villarreal break from a United corner and a have a two-on-one but Paco’s pass to Pino has too much weight on it and forces him wide. The chance is gone.

20:40 , Malik Ouzia

38 mins: It’s just not clicking for United at the moment. Pogba lets out a little frustration by lashing straight at the ‘keeper from a tight angle but it is at least United’s first shot on target.

20:35 , Malik Ouzia

34 mins: Better from Sancho as Fernandes rakes a deep pass to him out on the left and he drives at Foyth into the box. The Argentine does well in the end to get back at him and concede a corner.

20:33 , Malik Ouzia

31 mins: What a chance!

Varane makes a pig’s ear of this, a lapse in concentration, and Alcacer is onto it. He drags back towards the near-post and De Gea can only watch but the ball drifts just wide.

20:31 , Malik Ouzia

30 mins: Can Fred play right-back?

Danjuma stands Dalot up, romps past him, but then toe-pokes feebly wide of the near post.

20:29 , Malik Ouzia

27 mins: I was just about to say that’s a nice bit of play from Sancho as he shimmies past his man and exchanges passes with Telles but he then knocks the ball inside to, erm, no one.

20:23 , Malik Ouzia

22 mins: Cracking chance again for the visitors. They work a clever corner as Danjuma steps over the near-post ball and Moreno arrives onto it behind him but blazes over the bar.

20:20 , Malik Ouzia

17 mins: Another huge save from De Gea to bail out Dalot, who, honestly, cannot be far from being dragged here, regardless of who United have on the bench.

This time Danjuma is allowed to get a cross in far too easily and Paco Alcacer is thwarted by the goalkeeper’s reflexes.

20:16 , Malik Ouzia

14 mins: That’s a real waste. Moreno does a Dalot impression and runs off into the middle of the park for no apparent reason to leave Fernandes in acres of space but Varane overhits the pass straight out for a goal-kick.

20:12 , Malik Ouzia

10 mins: Great save!

Dalot is having a nightmare of a start as he overcommits to Moreno’s decoy run on the overlap to leave Danjuma space to fire at the far corner but De Gea gets a terrific, strong palm to it.

20:10 , Malik Ouzia

8 mins: Ronaldo’s first opportunity of the night. Telles delivers an outswinging corner and the Portuguese is up best but can’t keep his header down.

20:09 , Malik Ouzia

7 mins: What a chance for the visitors. Dalot is caught high up the pitch and Danjuma romps into the space to latch onto a ball over the top, only to then steer his effort straight at De Gea.

20:07 , Malik Ouzia

6 mins: United have set up with a very attacking shape here - McTominay is pretty much holding the fort on his own in midfield, with Fernandes and Pogba advanced on either side of him.

20:04 , Malik Ouzia

2 mins: Bright start from United. Ronaldo has it on the edge of the box and should probably slide Sancho in but instead lays back to Fernandes, who curls an effort over the bar from range.

KICK-OFF!

20:01 , Malik Ouzia

We are underway...

19:59 , Malik Ouzia

The teams are out at Old Trafford. Almost showtime.

19:56 , Malik Ouzia

Right then, five minutes to go until kick-off. In the early game in this group, Atalanta have beaten Young Boys 1-0 to go top of the standings.

19:53 , Malik Ouzia

Solskjaer was also asked who would be stepping up to take a penalty if United are awarded one tonight.

“Let’s see,” was his answer. Surely, it’ll be Cristiano Ronaldo...

Solskjaer has been discussing his team selection tonight...

19:46 , Malik Ouzia

On the enforced changes: “Alex and Diogo have been waiting for their chance and they’ve got it now. That’s what they train for so they’re ready. We’ve got Victor and Varane so that back four should be alright.”

On Shaw: “He’s not trained since Saturday, let’s see how long this will take.”

On Varane: “He’s been absolutely impressive since he’s come here, he’s taken to the group, he’s been authoritative and calm.”

Here’s a reminder of what happened last time these sides met...

Ronaldo to break appearance record

19:23 , Malik Ouzia

It’s an historic night for Cristiano Ronaldo in the Champions League, as they always seem to be.

The Portuguese equalled Iker Casillas’ all-time appearance record in the competition against Young Boys earlier this month and tonight he makes his 178th Champions League appearance to surpass his old teammate.

19:03 , Malik Ouzia

So, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer makes four changes to the side that started the 1-0 defeat to Aston Villa on Saturday, three of them enforced and in the backline.

Alex Telles, Diogo Dalot and Victor Lindelof come in for Luke Shaw, Harry Maguire and Aaron Wan-Bissaka.

The only unenforced change sees Fred drop out for Jadon Sancho, so you presume Paul Pogba will drop back into midfield.

Standard Sport prediction

18:19 , Malik Ouzia

For what feels like the umpteenth time in his tenure to date, serious questions are beginning to be asked of Solskjaer once again.

The Norwegian has been criticised for offering no shortage of excuses for recent results, though he insists he is still embracing the pressure of the job.

Draw specialists Villarreal’s defence has been miserly in LaLiga so far this term, but they are struggling to score and the absence of Moreno is a huge blow.

Another low-scoring tie wouldn’t be a surprise at all, but we think United will just nick it.

18:10 , Malik Ouzia

Manchester United will be without captain Harry Maguire for “a few weeks” with the calf problem he sustained against Aston Villa.
