As the clock struck midnight on July 1, six Manchester United players saw their contracts expire, slashing approximately £42m from the club's yearly wage bill.

The conclusion of the 2023/24 PSR window on the same night has given Sir Jim Ratcliffe more leeway to make his regime's first signings. It is believed that United have adhered to the Premier League's Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR) over the past year.

However, while Ineos have been active behind the scenes, they were certainly held back from making solid moves in the initial weeks of the summer transfer window. Now, with the arrival of July, the window for European clubs has opened, and Euro 2024 and Copa America are nearing their end, business is expected to pick up across the Premier League soon, and Old Trafford is anticipated to be a particularly bustling centre for transfers.

Not only has the start of a new PSR window eased some of the financial strain on United, but the departure of six first-team players from the club's wage bill will also contribute significantly. Raphael Varane, Anthony Martial, Brandon Williams, Jonny Evans, and Tom Heaton have become free agents at the end of their contracts.

In the meantime, Sofyan Amrabat's £8.5m season-long loan has concluded, and it seems United have chosen not to activate his £21m purchase option.

Last season, Varane and Martial were among the Red Devils' top earners, taking home around £17.7m and £13m per year, respectively. The departures of Amrabat, Williams (both £3.4m), Evans (£3.1m) and Heaton's (£2.3m) have significantly reduced the wage bill by around £42m too. This has given Ratcliffe the green light to pursue multiple deals that have been in early discussions recently.

As a result, United is expected to address their three priority positions - a centre-back, central midfielder and striker - over the next month. The Reds have already had a £43m bid for Jarrad Branthwaite rejected by Everton, but they are likely to return with an improved offer.

Matthijs de Ligt is also being considered as Bayern Munich prepare to sell. Meanwhile, Paris Saint-Germain's Manuel Ugarte has emerged as a top midfield target ahead of his expected departure from Parc des Princes.

PSG are reportedly willing to accept less than the £51m they paid Sporting Lisbon last summer. United are also said to be ready to activate the £34m release clause in Joshua Zirkzee's Bologna contract to provide competition for Rasmus Hojlund.

De Ligt, Ugarte and Zirkzee are unlikely to join while they're still representing their nations at Euro 2024 and the Copa America, but United's interest should intensify in the next couple of weeks prior to the pre-season tour of Europe and the United States.
