Man Uses Virtual Reality Headset To Propose To Girlfriend

An employee at software company Valve used a virtual reality headset to propose to his girlfriend with a computer-generated engagement ring.

Luckily for his newly betrothed, he also had a real-life engagement ready when she removed the headset.

Software maker Valve created the Vive virtual reality (VR) headset in collaboration with smartphone maker HTC, which is how Chandler Murch managed to orchestrate the techie proposal.

Newly engaged Kelly Totorice posted a description of the novel proposal on Facebook with the words:

“So there I was, typical day…on a sunken ship deck; fixing robots; painting three-dimensional fire; walking through the Alps; and then suddenly, a virtual engagement ring started floating my way. Chandler told me to grab it. Then told me to take off my headset, and there he really was, on one knee, with a real ring. It wasn’t imaginary anymore. But I didn’t say yes. I said, “OF COURSE I WILL MARRY YOU!” Thank you for such a hilarious and fun surprise. I love you and I can’t wait for the life ahead of us”.

The proposal took place at Valve’s head office in Bellevue, WA with the staffer taking his then-girlfriend into his place of work under the pretence of showing off some VR demos.

An uncredited photographer appears to have shared and captured the moment, with the images also being posted in Facebook.

This is the first proposal carried out using the HTC Vive, which isn’t due to go on sale until late 2015 at the earliest.
