Concerns from Manchester United legends about Marcus Rashford appear to have been vindicated by his England snub from Gareth Southgate.

Rashford has been left out of the extended 33-man Three Lions squad ahead of the Euros next month after a season which saw him fall out of favour for both club and country. It was a campaign blighted by off-the-pitch issues.

That led former United captains Roy Keane, Rio Ferdinand and Gary Neville to all voice their worries about him on the Stick to Football podcast last month, which prompted backlash from Rashford's brother Dwaine.

Taking to Instagram, he wrote: "I completely understand podcasts and how they work but if you have genuine concerns, pick up the phone. We know each other or have crossed paths...

"Airing so called concerns for the public to have an opinion is bad mind and for clickbait in my eyes. The fun fact is that most of these shows or ex pros have asked for exclusives."

Southgate has clearly taken into account Rashford's lacklustre form, with just eight goals in all competitions for the Red Devils, when considering his attacking options, despite him being an England regular during his tenure.

Keane, Ferdinand and Neville all called for the 26-year-old to make a change in his personal life, believing that to be the root of his problems. The former said: “I wouldn’t say I’m worried about him, but you look at him and there’s something amiss.

"The people around him, whether it be family or his manager, who’s on his case every day. Who is giving him an old-fashioned kick up the bum and saying ‘Come on, we need more from you’? If you want to be this leader, and you’re on the big contracts, then there is that responsibility."

Ferdinand reckoned he shouldn't be having such issues, like his unsanctioned night out in Belfast in January, at his age. He added: "He’s 26 - what were you [the panel] doing at 26?

"We were still making mistakes, don’t get me wrong, but on the football pitch you had it locked down, you knew what you were doing, you knew what you were about, who you were. There’s a big decision to make for him. From him, he’s got to look at who is around him."

And Neville seemed most concerned about the direction he's headed in. “He’s not right, and it’s not just a case of him not playing well, he doesn’t look happy," said the former England right-back. "I’m looking at him and thinking, 'I am worried about him'.

"We know there’s been a couple of instances this season, he’s come under pressure and his form has been bad, but I look at him and think, 'That’s not right.' It’s not a lad that’s grown up with the freedom and spirit of playing for Manchester United as a kid.”
