Yahoo News Manchester Airport hand luggage liquid rules ahead of May half term
Holidaymakers must continue to follow 100ml limits for liquids in hand luggage when flying this summer. Manchester Airport and major airlines have urged passengers to follow the current guidance.
It comes as some airports in the UK have rolled out new security scanners, which remove the need to stick to the 100ml limit. Thanks to the 3D scanning technology, passengers would no longer need to place liquids in plastic bags or remove laptops and electronic devices.
A nominal deadline of June 1 this year had been set by the government for major airports to install the Next Generation Security Checkpoint (NGSC) Scanners, but extensions were granted to several airports when it was clear that they wouldn’t meet the June 1 2024 deadline. Although they now have been successfully installed at Aberdeen International Airport, Teeside and London City Airports.

Manchester Airport has previously said that they continue to make ‘good progress’ with installing the scanners but that they won’t be fully rolled out until next year. The scanners are in place in some lanes at the airport, but to avoid any delays to security all passengers are urged to follow the current restrictions.
Major airlines have also urged passengers to stick to the 100ml restrictions. A spokesperson for Tui said: “While UK airports are installing new scanners to prepare for changes in security restrictions, at this time you should still follow current guidelines as not all airports have changed and destination airports still have these restrictions in place for your flight home. All liquids – including water and any creams, lotions, perfumes, hand sanitiser, foods, lighters – must be in containers no larger than 100ml.”
EasyJet confirmed that their guidance had not changed, and that liquids, aerosols and gels should be in containers of 100ml or less to pass through security, and that they should all fit into one transparent, re-sealable 20cm x 20cm bag. Ryanair advises passengers to follow the same guidance.
On its website, Jet2 says: “Please continue travelling as normal and assume that getting through security will be the same as you're currently used to, unless we tell you otherwise on the day. This means only taking liquids in containers holding 100ml or less, that fit in a clear, resealable plastic bag (no bigger than 20cm x 20cm) to security. The changes will be coming into effect in a phased approach at UK airports, so please don’t assume the new security systems are up and running at your departure airport just yet.”
