Manchester bomb victim: 'It felt like fire in my back'

A mother and daughter who were wounded in the Manchester bombing have told Sky News how they thought they were going to die in the blast.

Lizzie Murtagh and 12-year-old Olivia had just left the Ariana Grande concert and were walking into the foyer of the Manchester arena when the bomb exploded.

Lizzie said she did not feel her wounds at first. She says she was so scared the adrenaline kicked in, masking the pain.

"There was a big boom and a horrendous sound and there was a ringing in my ears. Then there was alarms going off, smoke everywhere, as it went off there was big massive flash like a flash of white light, all bits flying everywhere like shrapnel," she said.

"I just knew it was a bomb but I was more scared of a second one going off, but with the impact and the shake we sort of fell forward so I dragged Olivia up and we were just running."

Olivia, however, described how she immediately felt a burning pain as she was hit by shrapnel.

She said: "It felt like fire in my back and then I seen loads of smoke and people on the floor and there was blood everywhere."

Both Lizzie and Olivia took photographs of their injuries.

The horrific images reveal deep wounds where bits from the device - nuts and bolts - penetrated their skin.

"The shrapnel ripped through our clothes as well, Olivia had lots of holes in her coat but she had that tied around her waist which probably was quite lucky because it's blocked her from more injuries," Lizzie said.

The pictures of their wounds contrast sharply with the happy mother and daughter snaps the pair took at the beginning of the evening, which show them enjoying drinks and a meal together.

The finale of Ariana Grande's concert was also captured by Olivia on her phone.

She filmed the final song at 10.29. Just a few minutes later, Lizzie said, they were leaving the venue after what had been a fantastic night.

"I think he has waited for Ariana Grande knowing there is young girls and children there," she said.

"We seen so many children that night enjoying themselves. They've paid to go and see their idol just like I did with Olivia and then to not come home, it's sickening."
