The streets of Manchester have been transformed into New York City as a Spider-Man spin-off is filmed in part of the city.

Yellow taxis, American-style trucks, and a USA Today advert were seen in the Northern Quarter on Tuesday.

A subway station called Front Street has also surfaced for the filming of upcoming movie Morbius.

The film will tell the story of biochemist Dr Michael Morbius, who inadvertently infects himself with a rare form of vampirism.

Hollywood star Jared Leto, who plays the film's title character, has been spotted on the set of Manchester's makeshift Big Apple.

British actor Matt Smith will play Morbius' friend Loxias Crown in the production, which is due to be released in July 2020.

Hundreds of people reportedly gathered to watch the Marvel production being filmed around Dale Street and Port Street.

Kalpesh Rana, who captured images of the set around Stevenson Square, told Sky News: "It was all quite exciting to be on the scene with flood lights and crew on set moving around, in a small part of the city in glorious Manchester weather."

He added that it was unclear what action might have been being filmed at the time.

The set will be in place for at least the rest of this week, the Manchester Evening News reports.

The Northern Quarter has previously been transformed into New York City for the Marvel film Captain America: The First Avenger, which was released in 2011.
