Manchester United attacker Facundo Pellistri scored his maiden senior international goal for Uruguay in Thursday’s 4-0 friendly win over Mexico - but the match will be remembered for all the wrong reasons.

Liverpool striker Darwin Nunez netted a hattrick in the contest but a memorable game for both him and Pellistri is at risk of being overshadowed by crowd trouble. A number of home Mexico fans were irate at seeing their side go four goals down just four minutes after half-time.

On 54 minutes, the referee was forced to halt the match due to crowd trouble in the stands. The friendly was again paused and then eventually ended just before the clock hit 90 minutes when several spectators ran onto the pitch.

Pellistri - who assisted Nunez’s hattrick goal - stayed on the field for the full duration of the game in what was his 20th appearance for Uruguay. After featuring at the 2022 World Cup, the winger has made the squad for this summer’s Copa America.

Pellistri’s future at United is unclear, having been loaned out to relegated La Liga basement side Granada for the second half of the season. The 22-year-old started 14 of his 15 outings, recording two goals and two assists.

Pellistri still has two years left on his deal but is not guaranteed consistent game time at United. He played 14 times for his parent club this term before his January switch, starting just three matches.

The wide man actually made his World Cup bow in Qatar before being handed his senior United debut, which came after the finals in January 2023. The player’s agent has often been outspoken about his desire for his client to secure more regular game time.

Pellistri had been scheduled to exit on loan in search of this last summer but a long-term injury to Amad prompted Erik ten Hag to change his plans.
