'Mandatory' speed limiter which could hit UK cars from July 6 sparks fury

New speed limiters which could be installed from July have sparked fury. A new European Union rule will mandate the installation of Intelligent Speed Assist (ISA) technology in new vehicles from July 6 - meaning all new cars may have to follow suit in the UK if manufacturers are given strict new rules to adhere by.

The European Transport Safety Council (ETSC) has previously claimed new ISA technology would reduce crashes by around 30 per cent. Officials have warned the move is likely to cut road deaths by a staggering 20 per cent.

Responding, a driver said: "My speed limiter is fitted to the bottom of my right leg and has proved one hundred per cent reliable over sixty years and a million miles of motoring." Another said: "More could and should. Won't happen because it will further dent sales."

Another fumed: "On my Mercedes the speed limiter goes as low as 20mph outher car manufacturers are different, there minimum speeds are higher, so how can they bring this law in when the minimum speed limiter varies from different car manufacturers."

"Next it will be the government restricting how far you can travel and when you can use your car, and if you dont conform we will switch it off, just more control over our lives," another said. "So, we have come out of the EU, but still have to follow its rules?" another asked.

"I thought the reason we left was to take back control of our own country?, we get none of the benefits of being in it, ie no red tape on EU travel, just the bad stuff." Another said: "It's not the car causing accidents, it's the thoughtless, irresponsible drivers. For goodness sake, won't these car safety fanatics think sensibly."

Dr David Hynd, chief scientist at Transport Research Laboratory, said: "It stops me getting speeding fines. It saves me money on my fuel bill, which is always very welcome. But, best of all, it provides an extra set of eyes, which I find particularly helpful when I'm navigating new places, or the roads are busy."
