Marc Roberts seals transfer to Birmingham City's rivals after St Andrew's exit

Marc Roberts will battle Birmingham City in League One next season after re-signing for Barnsley. The 33-year-old defender has signed a two-year contract at Oakwell.

Roberts was released by Blues at the end of last season after seven years at St Andrew's. The veteran defender was among six senior players to leave Blues at the end of their contracts. John Ruddy, Neil Etheridge, Gary Gardner, Ivan Sunjic and Scott Hogan also departed.

Roberts made 197 appearances for Blues across all competitions having joined the club from Barnsley back in 2017. He only made 14 Championship appearances last term for Blues due to a series of calf problems.

“It feels class to be back,” Roberts said of his return to Barnsley. “I’m buzzing with it to be fair; I can’t wait to get going. It was class the last time I was here. It was the best part of my career really.”

Roberts will be reunited with Blues shortly before Christmas when Chris Davies' team travel to Oakwell on Saturday, December 7 before the defender makes his St Andrew's return on Saturday, April 5.

Barnsley finished sixth in League One last season before losing out in the play-off semi-finals to Bolton. The last time Roberts played for Barnsley in the third tier, the Tykes won promotion to the Championship via the play-offs in 2016.
