Baroness Thatcher's first great-grandchild has been born in the United States.

Michael Thatcher, the only grandson of Britain’s first female Prime Minister, and his wife Courtney welcomed their child Emery Monroe Thatcher last week.

The child was born just days after Lady Thatcher would have celebrated her 94th birthday on October 13.

Mr Thatcher had earlier announced that he and his wife would be having a girl in posts on social media.

Using a video of a wine decanter frothing with pink liquid, Mr Thatcher wrote: “Reveal: Composition of the 23rd chromosomal pair of our currently developing offspring.”

His sister had said in response to an image of the baby’s scan that she “intended” to play the role of the “cool aunt”.

Lady Thatcher, who had personally announced her own grandson’s arrival on the steps of Downing Street in 1988, doted on him and his younger sister Amanda.

In the late 1990s she told an interviewer that her “greatest delight” was when her “daughter-in-law sends me photographs of the grandchildren. Apart from seeing them in the flesh, that is the greatest pleasure I have in the whole year, far exceeding everything else."

Mr Thatcher is heir apparent to the Thatcher baronetcy, currently held by his father.

The 31-year-old lives in Dallas as does his mother, Diane Beckett, the first wife of Sir Mark Thatcher, the former prime minister’s son.

The siblings came to England in 2016 to lead Lady Thatcher’s funeral procession but the pair, who are dedicated evangelical Christians, have otherwise stayed out of the spotlight.

Mr Thatcher, the grandson of the grocer’s daughter who became the world’s most powerful woman, was last seen upholding the family tradition as he served customers at a store and pharmacy in Texas.

His parents divorced in 2005 after a tumultuous 18-year marriage in which his mother, a Texan millionairess claimed she hired private detectives to spy on her husband.
