The store was safely evacuated and it was later confirmed that the smell was due to "a small fire in a flat roof where building works had been underway". The fire was not in the M&S building.

Today, June 29, Marks and Spencer has opened as usual.

A spokesperson from Marks and Spencer said: "Due to a fire incident in a building adjacent to the store on Friday evening, the store was evacuated while the fire brigade attended the scene and extinguished the fire.

"Colleagues were safe and accounted for and when it was deemed safe to do so by the fire brigade, re-entered the store. The store opened as usual to customers at 8am this morning (June 29)."
