Marvel stole the show at Comic-Con International once again on Saturday (July 22) with a thrilling highlight reel from Avengers: Infinity War.

A week on from the first-ever screening of footage from the third Avengers blockbuster at the D23 Expo in Anaheim, fans jammed into Hall H got to see a variation celebrating the first 10 years of the MCU.

The highlight reel looked back on the origins of the Marvel Cinematic Universe with Iron Man, as well as ahead to the Avengers, the Guardians of the Galaxy, Doctor Strange and Spider-Man joining forces next year.

The mad titan Thanos (Josh Brolin) is the one entity terrifying enough to unite the heroes from all corners of the cosmos, especially now that he's got his hands on the all-powerful Infinity Stones.

That power is only full display in the footage shown in Hall H, as the mad titan thwarts Iron Man's Hulkbuster armour, Spider-Man's upgraded Stark Industries suit and even Thor's hammer Mjölnir.

Since Marvel has yet to actually release the footage online (as per its standard policy at Comic-Con), we'll recap what those lucky people in Hall H saw:

  • Much like the teaser screened last weekend at the D23 Expo, the opening shot is an unconsciousThor floating through the vastness of space, presumably after the events of Ragnarok.

  • Thor's lifeless body literally collides with the windshield on the Guardians of the Galaxy's ship. Despite Rocket's suggestion that Star-Lord simply run the windshield wipers to get rid of the God of Thunder, the Guardians bring him aboard.

  • As the Guardians are examining Thor in the sick bay, the very confused Asgardian suddenly pops up shouting: "Who the hell are you people?"

  • There's a shot of Tom Hiddleston's return as Loki, who we see holding the Tesseract from The Avengers.

  • On earth, Peter Peter suddenly develops his Spider Sense, Black Widow goes blonde and Captain America grows a beard during his exile.

  • When the actual fighting with Thanos commences, Iron Man works with the Guardians in trying to outbumber Thanos. But it doesn't work.

  • As we previously mentioned, Thanos wallops the Avengers and the Guardians. Even Doctor Strange's Eye of Agamotto isn't strong enough to stop the hulking alien warlord.

  • In battle, Peter Parker wears what appears to be the Tony Stark-designed Iron Spider suit. The spiffy upgrade doesn't do much good, as we later see Iron Man cradling an injured Spidey, who tells him: "Tony, I'm sorry."

  • The kicker is that Thanos literally picks up a planet and throws it at The Avengers. An actual planet, you guys!

(Thanos will also team up with his children, The Black Order)

Avengers: Infinity War is the first of two movies designed to close the first major chapter of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, according to the studio's creative chief Kevin Feige.

"We are looking at a five-movie storyline – Civil War, Homecoming, Avengers: Infinity War, untitled Avengers, Homecoming 2 – or whatever we end up calling it – as an amazing five-story journey for Peter Parker," Feige noted.

"In the way that the events of Civil War directly inform the opening of Homecoming and his state of mind as he goes back to high school, so too will the events of the next two Avengers as he continues with high school.

"This original 22-movie arc ends with the untitled Avengers in May of 2019 and then two months later it will be Peter and Spider-Man (on July 5, 2019) that usher us into the aftermath and how things proceed from there."

The beginning of the end comes when Avengers: Infinity War premieres on April 27, 2018 in the UK and May 4, 2018 in the US.
