Maryland: Everything we know about Suranne Jones' new ITV drama

Suranne Jones is taking the helm in a new ITV drama, Maryland, that tackles the impact of grief and how it can bring people closer together.

The three-part limited series was created by Jones alongside Anne-Marie O’Connor, and it will be coming to both ITV and its streaming platform ITVX.

When is Maryland on ITV and ITVX?

The three part series will be shown on ITV1 over three nights, airing at 9pm from Monday, 22 May to Wednesday, 24 May.

Maryland will also be made available in full on ITVX on Monday, 22 May, following the show’s premiere on ITV.

What is Maryland about?

Maryland follows sisters Becca and Rosaline, who have carved their own paths in life on both a professional and personal basis and are now estranged from one another.

The pair come back together under tragic circumstances when the body of their mother, Mary, is discovered in the Isle of Man, and they travel to the remote location in order to discover their matriarch’s dark secrets.

Mary, it turns out, has been leading a double life, one in Manchester with their father Richard, and another on the island. During their time on the island, Becca and Rosaline are forced to face the truth of their mothers lies.

Jones spoke about the drama during a press conference, saying that she and co-creator O’Conner were keen to see how a woman might lead a double life.

The actor shared: “I’ve always been fascinated by another life. Usually it’s men, so we were really intrigued about how a woman does that, and that’s what we kept coming back to.

“Every family has one of these stories, and we felt that was important to tell. It’s not got car chases, it’s very normal – but extraordinary.”

Who will star in Maryland?

Jones takes on the lead role of Becca, while House of the Dragon actor Eve Best portrays her sister Rosaline.

They are joined in the cast by Stockard Channing, George Costigan, Hugh Quarshie, Dean Lennox Kelly and Andrew Knott.

During her appearance on Lorraine, Jones said she chose to portray Becca: "I had the choice of either sister at the beginning, and most people thought I’d play Rosaline. I wish I had the wardrobe of Rosaline – she had cashmere and now I’m going, ‘My jeans are a bit short.’”

Maryland premieres on ITV1 at 9pm on Monday, 22 May and the limited series will air as a three-night event from Tuesday and Wednesday. The show will also be made available in full on ITVX on Monday, 22 May.
