Mason Greenwood has reportedly been given the go-ahead to sign for Juventus - five years on from their first "life-changing" attempt to buy him from Manchester United.

The 22-year-old forward spent last season on loan at La Liga side Getafe following an internal investigation at United that concluded it would be best for all parties if he continued his career elsewhere. He hasn't played for United since his arrest in January 2022 on charges of attempted rape, assault and coercive control.

Those were dropped by the Crown Prosecution Service 13 months later, allowing Greenwood to return to professional football in Spain. His performances there, with 10 goals and six assists across 36 games in all competitions, attracted significant transfer attention from around Europe.

United appear set to maintain their stance this summer and allow the forward to leave permanently. According to Sky Sport in Italy, Juventus are leading the race to sign him.

Greenwood's representatives are said to have indicated the club are his preferred choice in the transfer window, giving the Italian giants the green light to make an approach. Personal terms are believed to have already been agreed upon.

The transfer fee could prove to be a hurdle, however, with United reportedly holding out for a €50million (£42m) sum. Juventus are expected to offer an initial €30m (£25m) plus bonuses.

Before securing Greenwood's signature, Juventus need to offload Federico Chiesa or Matias Soule, both of whom have been linked with a move away from the Italian giants towards Roma. Soule, 21, is also reportedly attracting interest from Premier League clubs such as Newcastle United, Crystal Palace and Tottenham.

Greenwood has been admired from afar by Juventus for several years, even dating back to when he was just 17 years old. Speaking on the Talk of the Devils podcast in 2020, journalist Andy Mitten claimed the Italian giants were "prepared to offer his family life-changing amounts of money" in an attempt to pry him over to Italy the previous summer.

Of course, Greenwood knocked that back in favour of staying at Old Trafford, going on to score 35 goals in 129 senior games and earning himself an international call-up.

Speculation regarding his future has intensified in recent months. Clubs that have been linked with other than Juventus include Barcelona and Atletico Madrid in Spain, and Portuguese side Benfica.
