Britain could potentially experience a huge earthquake caused by fault lines that have been discovered in the area surrounding London.

The highest risk areas are thought to be the Home Counties, while Scotland is also potentially at risk, say reports.

Sitting in the centre of the home counties, London could also potentially be affected by any significant tremours, with catastrophic circumstances due to the densely populated nature of the city.

The newly discovered fault lines are said to link up to the San Andreas Fault, a tectonic boundary which is responsible for large-scale earthquakes on the west coast of America including the famous 1906 San Francisco earthquake which caused the deaths of 3,000 people.

While many minor earthquakes occur every year in Britain, only a handful of those are usually perceptible. Only two earthquakes have been felt in Britain in 2015 - one in Hampshire and one in the East Midlands.

However, experts are unable to rule out a major earthquake hitting Britain.

British Geological Survey seismologist Glenn Ford told Express.co.uk:

“We do have a major plate tectonic boundary between the Eurasian plate and the African plate.

“I’m sure there were larger earthquakes at some time.

“There is a possibility one of that size can hit the mainland UK.”
