A £275m cruise ship which is so luxurious it even has its own Roman-themed spa has dropped anchor in Plymouth Sound. The 600-passenger Silver Dawn cruise ship called in at Britain’s Ocean City as part of a round-Britain voyage.

It arrived at 8am today and will leave at 5pm after passengers have enjoyed a day in the city or an excursion to South West attractions. The 11-deck, Bahamas-registered “mega yacht”, which also can carry 411 crew, is described by Silversea Cruises as containing “sumptuous suites, outstanding itineraries, plus cutting-edge design and technology”.

The three-year-old vessel, built at a cost of about £275m, also promises its guests a “revolutionary spa and well-being concept “ called Otium which provides “onboard experiences of wellness, relaxation and indulgence through innovative treatments designed by our experts” and inspired by “the traditions of ancient Rome”. It is based on a concept “where everything from sumptuous food to spa experiences to socialising became a part of daily life for the elite”.

In addition to 288 cabins, Silver Dawn has six dining venues “each boasting a distinctive ambience and five-star service that rivals any land-based luxury hotel”. These include the seafood eatery Atlantide, the exclusive La Dame, La Terrazza, Asian specialist Kaiseki, and Italian-themed Spaccanapoli.

Silver Dawn visited Plymouth in May last year too. It is currently on a 10-day round-Britain trip, starting and ending in Southampton. It left Southampton yesterday, and tomorrow will be in Fishguard, in Wales, and then heads to Dublin, Belfast, the Orkney Islands, Edinburgh and Newcastle, before arriving back at Southampton on May 24.

Tomorrow, May 16, the much smaller vessel Exploris One is due to arrive in Britain’s Ocean City for the first time. It can carry up to 173 passengers and is an expedition ship, specially strengthened to carve its way through ice. It is operated by Exploris Cruises and Expeditions and is currently in the English Channel en route to Plymouth.
