A huge ship reminiscent of those straight out of a pirate tale is docking in Cardiff Bay later this month, with the public invited on board to explore it. The Galeón Andalucía is set to dock at Britannia Quay between May 10 and 12 before continuing its tour around the UK.

The ship is a replica of a galleon used by the Spanish between the 16th and 18th centuries for trade between Spain, America and the Philippines, and is the only one in the world that currently sails. And now the six deck ship which provides sail training will be open to the public. The ship will make pit-stops in Cardiff, Jersey, Plymouth, Poole, Scarborough, Southend-on-sea and Whitby before ending up in Great Yarmouth.

While aboard the ship, guests will be able to take a self-guided walking tour, talk to crew members and contemplate dozens of interactive exhibits, videos, projections and historical documents. Although the ship will be open to the public, it is in fact a real life sail training school which takes on 20 trainees as well as hosting 12 members of permanent sailing staff. The impressive vessel was built in 2009 in Spain and has been touring ever since.

The ship will be open to the public in Cardiff between 10am and 8pm each day on May 10,11 and 12, with the last entry taking place at 7pm. Prices start at £6 for children aged between five and 10 years old and £12 for adults. Tickets for children under five are free and a family ticket which consists of two adults and up to three children is £35. Find out how to get tickets to board the vessel here.
