After some weeks of speculation, it looks like Matt Smith will indeed be playing notorious serial killer Charles Manson in a new movie.

The Doctor Who and Crown star will lead Charlie Says, according to The Hollywood Reporter, which will be directed by American Psycho's Mary Harron.

The movie will focus on three young women sentenced to death following the Manson murders, although later given life imprisonment after the death penalty was lifted.

The women are taught by a graduate student called Karlene Faith (Merritt Wever), who helps them face the reality of their horrific crimes.

Hannah Murray (Game of Thrones), Odessa Young (Assassination Nation) and Marianne Rendon (Imposters) are set the play the three women.

Also cast are Suki Waterhouse (Detective Pikachu), Carla Gugino (Sin City) and Kayli Carter (Godless).

Harron's American Psycho writing partner Guinevere Turner will pen the screenplay, which is based on Ed Sanders' The Family and Faith's own book The Long Prison Journey of Leslie Van Houten.

"Guinevere Turner's script brings a fresh and unique perspective to the infamous story of the Manson murders and we have now found the perfect cast to bring it to life," Harron told THR.

The site also reports that Charlie Says will be launched at the Berlin International Film Festival later this month.

It is not to be confused with Quentin Tarantino's similarly-timed Charles Manson movie (that isn't a Charles Manson movie).
