Matthijs De Ligt has already been told why he would be wise to complete a transfer to Liverpool amid uncertainty around his future.

The centre-back is currently starring for Bayern Munich but faces an uncertain summer following the appointment of Vincent Kompany as their new manager. Kompany joined the Bundesliga giants from Juventus in 2022 in a deal reportedly worth up to £68 million.

Liverpool have been linked with De Ligt in the past during his time at Ajax before he instead signed for Juventus in 2019. Now, though, an opportunity for the Reds to sign the centre-back may be possible once again.

According to Sky Germany, Bayern Munich are willing to let De Ligt leave the club this summer. The report states that the German club are facing the prospect of selling at least one player to fund their summer business, with De Ligt the player deemed to have the highest market value.

Bayern reportedly want to sign Jonathan Tah from Bayer Leverkusen and Levi Colwill from Chelsea. De Ligt is contracted to the Bundesliga giants until 2027 and there has been no mention yet of a possible price tag for the centre-back.

It was back in 2019 that Liverpool were first linked with signing De Ligt. The defender, aged 19 at the time, helped Ajax reach the Champions League semi-final and captained the Eredivisie club to the league title ahead of rivals PSV Eindhoven.

De Ligt also had experience playing alongside Virgil van Dijk with the Netherlands national team. Fast forward five years and that is still the case, with the duo expected to star for their country at Euro 2024 this summer.

Five years ago, De Ligt was advised by then-Ajax Under-19 coach Ronald De Boer to choose a move to Liverpool if he was to leave the Eredivisie club. De Boer also pointed to De Ligt's partnership with Van Dijk as a reason why a move to Anfield would be beneficial to his career.

“For me, a 19-year-old boy, captain of Ajax, he’s the guy who is next to [Virgil] van Dijk in the [Dutch] national team," De Boer told talkSPORT back in April 2019 about De Ligt.

“For De Ligt, it’s up to him what he wants to do. He has to look for a team that plays attacking football and has time on the ball.

“For me [he can go to] Barcelona, Manchester City, Liverpool, Paris Saint-Germain, these teams I would advise him to go there."
