A McDonald's restaurant and takeaway has had to close its doors completely to customers for a month.

The High Street branch in Exeter, wildly popular with the city's nightlife due to its overnight opening hours, is undergoing a major refit that has forced the entire restaurant to close for weeks.

Plans submitted to Exeter City Council in April 2024 revealed a new vision for the branch which would see most of its indoor seating completely axed.

On Friday night, scores of revellers had to plod elsewhere for their post-booze grub when they were greeted with a sign which confirmed the store would reopen on July 17.

The sign reads: "Preparing... We're busy making some exciting changes, We reopen on17 July. Find us nearby at: McDonald's Marsh Barton EX2 8LH."

According to the planning application, it is seven years since McDonald's last refurbishment in Exeter High Street. Whilst most of the work is going on inside, the main changes outside the branch will be to its Waterbeer Street entrance in Guildhall Shopping centre.

A new door and shopfront window with replacement graphics is proposed and the impact has described as being 'minimal'. Changes to the front entrance of the building will mainly be freshening it up.
