Meet the sisters who are creating menswear jewellery in the most unique way

There are many jewellery designers who cater to a variety of styles and techniques for women. But how many designers do you know who pride themselves for creating a mark in the niche area of menswear jewellery? ‘AZGA’ does just that.

Founded by Nikita and Namita Bhandari, sisters from Jaipur (Rajasthan), ‘AZGA’ seeks to espouse the age-old craftsmanship of Rajasthani artisans and transform their works of art to wearable pieces. Their designs are inspired by the intricate carvings of Mughal and Moroccan architecture, the majestic wildlife of the Indian subcontinent and the rich flora and fauna of the region.

We got in touch with the talented sisters to have a quick chat about their designs, their brand ideology and their newest collection for women.

What made you guys get into the niche market of designing accessories for men?
Women had a lot to choose from, we wanted to add something artisanal yet fun and functional for men. Our creative background and experience helped us foray into the untapped men segment.

What made you move away from the usual classics to experiment with artisanal accessories?
For us, breaking the monotony was important. Not much value was given to other menswear accessories, except wallets, belts, ties etc. We wanted to incorporate traditional jewellery-making skills and involve local artisan clusters to make our accessories.

Tell us about the inspiration behind your new jewellery collection for women.
Men are and always will be our focus. But on many occasions, women have demanded us to make some pieces for them as well. Our new collection for women, ‘ZORA’, is a journey of blooming colours and simplicity. It is a treasure of vintage and modern meeting each other at dawn. ‘Zora’ is a capsule collection that has a combination of basic yet classic earrings and really interesting belts and brooches to accessorise.

What are some of the must-have accessories men should have in their wardrobe?
A pair of cufflinks to play strong in boardroom meetings. Also, Indian men must have a set of classic Bandhgala buttons.

Any accessories you think that men should stay away from?
Fashion and accessorising is about self-expression and one has to relate to one’s choices. But had I been a man, I would stay away from an ugly belt.
