Mr Markle said he had plans to visit the newlyweds in London as soon as he was well enough after missing the Royal wedding while recovering from heart surgery.

He said he had never had a conversation with any member of Harry’s family but added he would like to thank Prince Charles for stepping in to walk his daughter down the aisle.

Mr Markle also revealed he had planned to thank the Royal family for “letting his daughter in” during a speech on the big day.

He said: “I did have a little speech prepared. I wanted to talk about how Meghan told me about him.

“She called him this guy, this nice guy from England, this Prince. Then I wanted to thank the Royal family for letting my daughter in.”

Speaking of the moment he told his daughter he would be unable to attend, he said: “They [Meghan and Harry] were disappointed but they both said, Meghan cried I’m sure and they both said ‘take care of yourself, we’re really worried about you’ and the important thing is that you get better.”

The “proud” father said the couple had offered to fly to Mexico in the days following their nuptials.

But, he told Piers Morgan and Susanna Reid that he had turned down the offer over fears “the media would eat them alive”.

Meghan’s father added that he was “desperate” to visit the couple.

Despite his recent health problems he insisted he was “ready to go” at a time that is convenient for the Royals.
