  • Prince Harry and Meghan Markle reportedly turned down an invitation to attend and present at the Academy Awards on Sunday.

  • The couple have already made their first appearance since stepping down as senior royals yesterday, when they quietly attended a summit in Miami.

Now that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex are no longer tied to their royal duties, what does the next chapter of their life look like? There's not much to see yet, as the couple and their son, Archie, enjoy quiet time in Canada, but after attending a private JPMorgan Summit in Miami last night, it seems the duo won't stay far from an exclusive and untouchable lifestyle. So, where will this new stage of their lives take them next? Will it be among world leaders at Davos, double-dates with power couples like the Obamas, or perhaps on red carpets with Hollywood royalty?

The third possibility could've become a reality if Prince Harry and Meghan Markle were to attend the Oscars on Sunday night. Apparently, they were invited to attend and present the Best Picture award, but they turned it down, royal correspondent Emily Nash reports for Hello!. The duo was "were honored by the request, but declined the invitation," a source reportedly told Nash.

An Academy Awards appearance would've made perfect sense for Meghan and Harry in their post-royals chapter; it's (usually) high-brow, exclusive, and would've showcased them in the public eye among A-listers like Meryl Streep, Leonardo DiCaprio, and Brad Pitt. And if the Duke of Duchess of Cambridge are annual staples at the BAFTAs—where Prince William is president—then why not let the Sussexes hit up the Oscars?

The event also aligns with Meghan's acting background, and the couple are no strangers to the red carpet scene. They attended the Lion King premiere and met Beyoncé and Jay-Z last summer. Meghan even made a surprise appearance at the British Fashion Awards in 2018 to honor Givenchy's Clare Waight Keller as designer of the year.

And think of the fashion! During her fashion awards cameo, the Duchess of Sussex looked glam in an asymmetrical black column dress, sparing gold jewelry, and a sleek low bun—a sultry yet elegant deviation from her usual trousers, coats, and boatneck dresses. We can only imagine what she would've worn at the Oscars, without the pressure of being a senior royal.

In a painfully predictable award season, a cameo from the duo that just shook up the British monarchy would've been welcomed at the Oscars. But it looks like we'll have to wait until next year's ceremony.
