Meghan Markle sports Prince of Wales check mirroring one of Princess Diana's iconic looks

Yesterday afternoon Meghan Markle attended her third royal engagement with her soon-to-be husband, Prince Harry.

The couple arrived at Cardiff Castle appropriately wrapped up for the crisp Welsh weather in coordinating items of dark hued outerwear.

Meghan opted for a cruelty free coat by Stella McCartney and a casual pair of black jeans by small Welsh brand, Hiut Denim.

However, it wasn't until the couple disappeared inside that we managed to get a closer look at Meghan's full ensemble.

Sticking to her normal neutral palette, the 36-year-old had paired her black skinny jeans with a fashion forward off-the-shoulder jacket.

The smart grey garment by Theory boasted a subtle Prince of Wales check, which could be seen as a nod towards the royal family - in particular, Princess Diana.

Meghan has spoken before about her adoration towards Princess Diana, therefore it would come as no surprise if her recent pop of print was in homage to the princess.

A look back at Diana's style history proves that she did indeed have a penchant for a checked blazer, wearing a similar style to Meghan's at the Burghley Horse Trials in 1989 - as well as on several other occasions.

Moreover, this wouldn't be the first time one of the princes' partners have paid sartorial homage to their late mother.

The Duchess of Cambridge continues to draw comparison to Diana through her style choices - from their equally opulent wedding dresses, to wearing polka dot ensembles after the birth of their first child.

That being said, Meghan's choice of jacket could of simply stemmed from current trends.

The Prince of Wales check has recently been particularly popular both on and off the catwalks, with Victoria Beckham and Balenciaga being just a few of the designers to champion the trend.

Either way, Meghan's most recent look was as trendy as always.
