Mehdi Hasan Leaves MSNBC After Cancellation of Sunday Series

MSNBC personality Mehdi Hasan has opted to leave the network, following the November cancellation of his Sunday-night series The Mehdi Hasan Show.

“As we begin 2024 with an election coming, a war still ongoing, and too many Trump trials honestly to even keep track of, and with this show going away, I’ve decided it’s time for me to look for a new challenge,” Hasan said during his final broadcast on Sunday. “Tonight is not just my final episode of The Mehdi Hasan Show. It’s my last day with MSNBC. Yes, I’ve decided to leave. To be clear, I am so, so proud of what we’ve achieved on this show on this network, and I can’t thank you enough for tuning in and for your support, and for your feedback. But as they say, new year, new plans.”

MSNBC announced on Nov. 30 that its weekend lineup would get an overhaul, including network fixture Ayman Mohyeldin replacing Hasan on Sunday nights. At the time, Hasan was slated to stay with MSNBC as a political analyst and fill-in host, until his exit announcement on Sunday.

The Mehdi Hasan Show, which found Hasan providing analysis and interviews about the day’s events, initially launched on Peacock in 2020 and later joined the MSNBC lineup in February 2021. In addition to that show’s cancellation, MSNBC’s weekend shake-ups included Yasmin Vossoughian departing her weekend time slot to become a national reporter and fill-in host; Jonathan Capehart and Katie Phang moving to later time slots (6 pm and 12 pm ET, respectively); and the addition of panel show The Weekend (premiering Saturday, Jan. 13, at 8 am), focused on the 2024 election.
