Melissa McCarthy is going for a slightly darker turn than usual in the first trailer for upcoming movie Can You Ever Forgive Me?.

The black comedy casts the Bridesmaids star as real-life writer Lee Israel, a biographer who has fallen out of favour with publishers and struggles to get her work published.

As a result, she does what we would all do - forge letters from more accomplished, famous writers, naturally.

Unsurprisingly her exploits lead her into a life of crime and deception.

The first trailer shows a rather different turn from the actress, who we are used to seeing in more comic fare. Perhaps an Oscar nomination is on the cards for next year? The Academy does love a good career U-turn, after all.

Can You Ever Forgive Me?, which is directed by The Diary of a Teenage Girl's Marielle Heller and also stars Richard E Grant, is due out on October 19 later this year (right at the start of awards season, might we add).

However, it is not the only movie McCarthy has got coming up this year.

We're set to see a lot of the former Mike & Molly actress over the coming months, as this summer will also see her star in Life of the Party, where she plays a woman who enrols in the same college course as her daughter after being dumped by her husband.

She'll also star in The Happytime Murders, which follows two detectives investigating a murder in a seedy town populated by humans and puppet strippers.

In all, a pretty busy 2018 for McCarthy then.
