The newly formed Melton and Syston seat is expected to be a close result, but is predicted to be held by the Conservative’s Edward Argar. Areas of the Charnwood constituency won by Mr Argar in the last election will form part of the newly named seat.

Find out what your candidates have to say on the key issues below.

Conservative candidate Edward Argar

"First elected in 2015 as MP for Charnwood, following the boundary changes, I am standing to be the MP for the new Melton and Syston constituency, an area I know well, a large part of which I previously represented.

"I care passionately about our area, our communities, public services, and people. My wife, Tish, and I live in the constituency, like you; we use these services, like you. Previously, I worked in business, was a school governor, an elected Councillor, and sat on an NHS Board. If re-elected, my plan focuses on:

"Improving local services, including transport (funding for the southern leg of Melton's by-pass, & tackling safety hotspots on the A46 & A52), health (more services in Melton Mowbray Hospital, alongside a second Melton GP Practice); investment in local schools; and in tackling flooding in places like Thurmaston, Syston, Sileby, the Vale, & Wreake Villages.

"Continuing to oppose unsustainable over-development, supporting our farmers and villages' rural services, and working to protect our countryside;

"Backing our police to tackle crime and ASB; backing defence with a 2.5 per cent of GDP by 2030 spending pledge; backing pensioners' security with the Pension Triple Lock Plus; supporting further action tackling illegal migration; and backing your family's economic security by securing further investment in our local economy, jobs, high streets, and Melton town centre.

"But most importantly, with a track record of delivery, but more service to offer, I'll always be your voice locally and nationally, working for you, on your side as your MP."

Labour candidate Zafran Khan

"After 14 years, Britain has had enough of the Tories and is crying out for change. It’s my hope that I can, as your Labour MP, deliver that change here for Melton, Syston, Sileby, Thurmaston and the villages.

"I’m Zafran. I was born and raised here in the East Midlands. When I was young, I spent lots of time exploring the Vale and the surrounding countryside with my uncle Simon who lived in Melton.

"My career has been in the events industry and it has made me an advocate for workers in the hospitality industry. I’m also passionate about the environment and I’ve co-led several campaigns to make our region a greener, cleaner place to live. I also believe that children and young people deserve access to sport, which is why I set up a local parkrun.

"If I get the honour of representing Melton and Syston in Parliament, I will take a clear stand on our environment. We must stop sewage being dumped in our rivers and brooks, deliver proper flood protection for homes and businesses, and ensure developers protect and enhance our green spaces.

"Labour will put failing water companies under special measures to clean up our rivers, make our communities more resilient with funding for flood protection and land management, and reform our planning legislation to support our local councils.

Alliance for Democracy and Freedom candidate Teck Khong

"Alliance for Democracy and Freedom is unlike any other party. It is an alliance of independent and patriotic candidates. Without central party dictating to me, I am accountable to you, the people of Melton and Syston. As your MP, I am here to serve the needs of the constituents across a whole range of issues free from party whip or inappropriate influence from mainstream media, powerful globalists and supranational organisations such as WHO and WEF. I will truly be your voice in Parliament.

"Government compliance with unelected supranational bodies like WHO without consulting you has damaged livelihoods, harmed lives and caused excess deaths. Climate Change Agenda with its Net Zero policies impoverish and enslave us. Labour encouraged mass immigration while Conservatives’ inability to deal with illegal immigration is ruining the stability of our country. Government should respect our rights and freedoms.

"Ill people can’t see a proper GP in a timely manner and those people who have to attend A&E face unacceptable waiting times for treatment. NHS Dentistry is virtually non-existent. Our health service is on its knees because our politicians have no clue. I can’t stand by anymore. Without health, every endeavour and every ambition become irrelevant.

"No doctor or politician in my 40-year career as frontline GP has a clear overview of healthcare and insight into policy failings. No one has offered cogent remedial solutions.

"Elect me and I will fight with every fibre of my being to fix our NHS, serve the people and save our country!"

Liberal Democrats candidate Andy Konieczko

"My name is Andy Konieczko, and I’m standing for the Liberal Democrats to become the next MP for Melton and Syston. I was born in Leicester and grew up in Melton Mowbray. My parents still live in Melton, and I’m a regular visitor to the area.

"I believe in putting people first and helping them to fulfil their potential - so that we can all achieve what we want to in life. But too many people aren’t getting the opportunity to do that at the moment. I know that getting a GP and dentist appointment in our area is incredibly hard, and waiting times for cancer treatment is putting lives at risk.

"I'm shocked that the government is letting water companies get away with dumping sewage in our precious waterways. And, to make things worse, our politicians refuse to take responsibility for their mistakes. This last parliament will be remembered for scandal rather than solutions.

"Melton and Syston residents deserve better. It’s clear that people have had enough. It’s now time to use your vote to choose an MP who’ll stand up for you and start putting things right.

"Who do you think is best placed to do that? Is it the Conservatives - the party that created the mess on the first place [sic]? Is it Labour - the party that’s admitted it can’t win in Melton and Syston so is focusing its attention elsewhere in the East Midlands? It’s time for fresh thinking with the Lib Dems!"

Rejoin EU candidate Matt Shouler

"I’m from a Melton family. I’ve lived here most of my life. I’ve dedicated my career to public service: Royal Navy; HM Diplomatic Service; Police Special Constabulary. I’ve never run for public office.

"But like most Britons today, I want to repair the damage that Brexit is doing to our economy, our society and our national reputation. Everyone agrees Brexit has failed. But the big parties are ignoring it. Melton and Syston people know what experts said all along: Brexit is making us poorer.

"Melton and Syston are rural capitals of food, where importers and exporters want rid of Brexit red tape and charges. Our farmers deserve their EU subsidies back. Our countryside needs its EU environmental protections back.

"Our NHS needs to employ EU staff without extra red tape. Our local economy needs the EU investment we used to get. Our children deserve their EU citizenship. And we deserve to travel in Europe without long queues and roaming charges, just like we used to.

"Brexit has poisoned national politics, and twisted the people’s will. The Brexit con, that 52% voted for, is not what has happened. In this election, the Conservatives cannot win nationally. And Labour cannot win in Melton and Syston. So a vote for either big party is wasted.

"Brexit was a con trick. It was meant to make us richer but it is making us poorer. 64% of British adults already agree it was a mistake. On 4 July, please vote Rejoin EU."
