How I Met Your Father has cast Daniel Augustin ahead of the spin-off's first season.

Based on How I Met Your Mother – the comedy series which starred the likes of Josh Radnor, Neil Patrick Harris and Marvel's Cobie Smulders – the new show follows Sophie (played by Lizzie McGuire star Hilary Duff) as she tells her son the story of how she and his dad became an item.

According to Deadline, Augustin is set to play Ian, a role that was originally assigned to God Friended Me alum Brandon Micheal Hall before he was forced to drop out of the Hulu project due to scheduling conflicts.

The character is said to be a Tinder match who Sophie chats to online for weeks before agreeing to meet up in person.

Throughout his career, Augustin has also appeared in titles such as Treble in Paradise, Dynasty, Grey's Anatomy and David Makes Man.

"God's plan," he wrote on Instagram alongside a screenshot of the publication's original story, shortly after the announcement went live.

"As a huge fan of How I Met Your Mother I'm honoured and even a little nervous that [the creators of the original series] Carter Bays and Craig Thomas [who are also exec-producing] would trust me with the sequel of their baby," Duff, who is also on board as producer, previously said in a statement (via Variety).
