The weather is finally starting to heat up in Cambridgeshire after a miserable and wet start to summer. Temperatures in the county are expected to reach up to 22 to 23C this week.

The Met Office has forecast plenty of sunshine over the next few days, with Thursday (June 20) looking to be the brightest day. Sunny intervals are due to last all day, with similar conditions predicted for the rest of the week.

This will make for a refreshing change from the gloomy and wet conditions at the start of the month. Heavy rain has drenched the UK in recent weeks, with flooding and cooler-than-average temperatures in many areas of the country.

Cambridgeshire weekend forecast

The Met Office says this week will feel "very warm for those in the sunshine" with temperatures jumping to around or above average, which makes a nice change.

Met Office Deputy Chief Meteorologist Dan Harris said: "In stark contrast to the first half of June, where temperatures have widely been below average, we are expecting to see a steady uptick through the second half of this week, rising to around or above average, and it will likely feel very warm for those in the sunshine.

"This initial spell of warm conditions isn’t expected to last too long however, as it turns more changeable through Friday and into the weekend with areas of cloud and rain spilling east across the UK."

Looking ahead to next week, BBC Weather has predicted that the bright and sunny conditions will continue, with temperatures reaching as high as 24C. Although the Met Office has not released their specific forecast for the upcoming week, they say that a drier, warmer, and settled spell is expected to come into effect.

How long will the warm weather last?

The Met Office long-range forecast said: "A change to cloudier weather with outbreaks of rain, these most prevalent in the west of the UK, is expected to be well underway by the start of the forecast period. However, this may not last too long, as it continues to look increasingly likely that a drier, warmer, and settled spell will begin to develop later this coming weekend, and into the following week.

"There is a small chance that this could persist for much of the rest of the period, turning increasingly hot, however by mid-next week a large range of outcomes which also include a small chance of colder, more unsettled weather also become possible. Generally settled, and warmer than average conditions appear most likely."
