Met Office verdict on reports 26C 'week-long' heatwave could hit UK from Friday

The Met Office says there are 'tentative signs of building high pressure' next week, however 'showers or longer spells of rain are also likely to affect the country'.

It comes as other rival forecasters say the UK faces a scorching week-long heatwave starting on Friday, with weather maps reportedly turning fiery red as June progresses. Predictions from Ventusky and WX Charts, which use Met Desk data, state that from Cornwall to Essex, temperatures are set to soar from June 14, with London expected to hit a sizzling 26C.

In other areas, the forecast claims Midlands will see highs in the mid-twenties, while Lincolnshire and Yorkshire will also enjoy warm weather, with temperatures creeping from the low to high twenties throughout June. Meanwhile in Lancashire and the North West, mercury levels are expected to hover around the 20C mark.

It's reported that these balmy conditions could delight Brits across the country for up to a week, according to BirminghamLive. However both the Met Office and BBC Weather forecasts so far show a very different outlook with temperatures across the UK struggling to get above 21C while rain and thunder showers are expected.

The Met Office forecast for today (June 10) reads: "A cloudy start, but soon brightening up, with sunny spells developing for many. However, there will be some scattered showers breaking out in the afternoon, perhaps locally heavy, especially over hills. Breezy and feeling cool for the time of year. Maximum temperature 16C."

Its forecast for Tuesday, June 11, meanwhile, goes on to add: "After a chilly start, it will be a mostly dry and bright day, with occasional sunny spells. Perhaps a few scattered light showers. Breezy and staying on the cool side. Maximum temperature 15C.

And the outlook for Wednesday to Friday from the Met Office explains: "Largely dry and bright on Wednesday. Turning more unsettled on Thursday and Friday, with perhaps some heavy and persistent rain moving steadily eastwards. Cool at first, becoming milder by night."

The long range forecast for June 14 to June 23 states: "On Friday and over the weekend, the weather will likely remain a mix of sunshine and showers. During the daytime on each day, showers could become heavy and slow moving, and there is a chance these might turn thundery at times.

"However, not everywhere will catch a shower, and many places may hold on to warm, sunny days with light winds. Next week, confidence for any dominant weather regimes is considered very low.

"There are tentative signs of building high pressure from the west at times, but showers or longer spells of rain are also likely to affect the country, with the eastern half of England and Scotland on balance most likely to experience wetter, or at last more showery weather."

The forecast for June 24 to July 9 currently reads: "The outlook remains uncertain for any particular weather patterns to dominate during this period. As such, typical conditions for the UK are most probable, with a mixture of weather types.

"All areas can expected to see some spells of drier, sunnier weather, but there will also be showers or longer spells of rain at times. Temperatures are most likely to be close to, or above, climatological average."
