Many were rightly making the most of the weekend weather in Wales on Saturday, which was the hottest day of the year in the country so far, ahead of a forecasted significant change in the climate in the coming days including a yellow weather warning for thunderstorms.

According to the Met Office Wales should expect thunderstorms and rain over the next few days after an unusually warm weekend when temperatures were as high as 22°C in some parts by Saturday afternoon.

Pictures from beaches across the country on Saturday showed thousands basking in the sun, but that is expected to change from Sunday afternoon with “thundery showers developing bringing heavy rain and possible hail”.

A yellow weather warning from midday to 10pm on Sunday reads: “Heavy showers and thunderstorms could lead to some disruption in places, especially to travel. Isolated flooding is possible.”

The weather warning for Sunday covers all of Wales other than Pembrokeshire. The rain is expected to clear by Sunday evening but it will remain cloudy, while temperatures will remain on the warm side through Sunday with highs of 22 °C.

Temperatures are expected to fall considerably after Sunday, predicted to be between 12-16°C on Monday and Tuesday with a high chance of rain. Temperatures on Wednesday and Thursday will be similar, between 11-16°C with showers also likely on Wednesday and Thursday.

The outlook from Monday to Wednesday reads: “Rain and blustery winds return from the southwest to start the new week and feeling colder than in recent days.”
