'There is method in his madness': Boris Johnson reveals admiration for Donald Trump in leaked speech

Boris Johnson has revealed his admiration for Donald Trump, claiming that the US president would do a good job of handling the Brexit negotiations.

The foreign secretary said he was ‘increasingly admiring’ of the divisive President, praising his unorthodox negotiating style.

‘I have become more and more convinced that there is method in his madness,’ Mr Johnson said.

‘Imagine Trump doing Brexit. He’d go in bloody hard. There’d be all sorts of breakdowns, all sorts of chaos.

‘Everyone would think he’d gone mad. But actually you might get somewhere. It’s a very, very good thought.’

Mr Johnson made the ungaurded comments at a closed-door meeting at the Institute of Directors in London, a recording of which was leaked to Buzzfeed News.

He also discussed the upcoming summit between Donald Trump and Kim Jong-un in Singapore, where the two leaders are set to discuss the nuclear disarmament of the Korean peninsula.

‘Of course we’ve got to help the Americans do this thing,’ he said.

‘I just talked to Mike Pompeo, my counterpart in the US State Department.

‘What they want us to do is to use our nuclear expertise to dismantle Kim Jong-Un’s nuclear missile. That’s what he asked me to do today.’

During the private meeting, the former London mayor made a series of embarrassing revelations that will only add to the Theresa May’s existing headaches, including a warning about the risk of a Brexit ‘meltdown’.

The Brexiteer branded the Treasury the ‘heart of Remain’ and claimed Philip Hammond’s department was sacrificing the possible benefits of Brexit to avoid short-term problems.

He told the meeting that the UK is reaching a ‘moment of truth’ in the negotiations with the bloc.

‘You’ve got to face the fact there may now be a meltdown. OK?’ he told the meeting.

‘I don’t want anybody to panic during the meltdown. No panic. Pro bono publico, no bloody panic. It’s going to be alright in the end.’

Friends of Mr Johnson said: ‘This was a private dinner under Chatham House rules so it is sad and very disappointing that it has been covertly recorded and distributed to the media.’
