Joining icons like Steven Spielberg, Reese Witherspoon, and even Mickey Mouse, the 64-year-old actor was the 2,585th recipient selected by the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce to have their name written in gold on the infamous boulevard.

Michael was watched by his son Sean, film director John Lee Hancock, and a huge crowd of fans who had gathered, when he said: “How I grew up, speaking about yourself…to any degree was kind of frowned upon. It’s so embarrassing to me in a way. I’m embarrassed. I’m embarrassed.

"To listen to what’s said about you and to feel at all like you deserve this, is just not the way I’ve ever thought.”

He added: “I always wanted to be good. That’s all I ever really wanted to be - good at what I did. Honestly, to tell you the truth, I think sometimes I am. Sometimes I think I’m pretty damn good.”

Michael - who won a Golden Globe for his performance in Birdman, starred in Oscar winning movie Spotlight last year and has just finished filming biopic The Founder - also used his speech to praise sports star Michael Jordan for his $2 million donation to help improve relations between black Americans and the police.

He added: “I gotta tell you I’m going to thank (Jordan) myself. And I don’t care if people say it took him too long to do it - the fact is, he did it.”

Congratulations Michael!
