Michael Olise move provides exciting Newcastle United transfer hint as rivals challenged

If any naysayers are bemoaning Eddie Howe's safe and solid transfer recruitment after Lloyd Kelly's arrival was confirmed and talks continue for Burnley goalkeeper James Trafford, a big slice of humble pie may about to be eaten as the Magpies seek a deal that would certainly get tongues wagging.

Crystal Palace winger Michael Olise, a man who ended the season with a flourish and only marginally missed out on making the behemoth that is the French Euros squad, is the latest star to be linked with a move to St James' Park. The 22-year-old will be one of the hottest properties in the transfer window and Newcastle being named as a target is an exciting statement of intent from the club's hierarchy.

Newcastle have contacted Crystal Palace to enquire about what type of figure it would take to prise the attacker away from Selhurst Park, according to the Athletic. You would imagine it will take a fee north of £50m to see any exit materialise.

Bayern Munich, Manchester United and Manchester City have also been touted as potential destinations for Olise, while Chelsea agreed terms with the player last summer and have revived their interest. Esteemed company for Newcastle to be jostling with.

As well as being an exciting transfer option, Newcastle's interest also provides a big hint that the club are ready to go all out for a right winger before the end of the summer. Chronicle Live understands Howe wants an attacking option brought in on the right, along with a new goalkeeper and potentially another defender.

Any exit for Callum Wilson would add a striker to the list, while offers for Miguel Almiron and Yankuba Minteh will be considered given the desire to strengthen on the right of Newcastle's front three.

After acquiring Kelly on a free transfer, pushing hard but ultimately missing on fellow free agent Tosin Adarabioyo and seeking to sign a cheaper goalkeeper in the form of James Trafford, rather than blowing a big chunk of the budget on Aaron Ramsdale or Giorgi Mamardashvili, Newcastle are clearly pushing for shrewd moves that make financial sense and allow them the potential of a marquee signing.

This is nothing new. Dan Burn and Kieran Trippier arrived in relatively cheap deals before Bruno Guimaraes' big-money incoming weeks later back in 2022. The bargain purchase of Nick Pope was followed by a record-breaking swoop for Alexander Isak. This time last year there was an outlay of £130m on Sandro Tonali, Tino Livramento and Harvey Barnes, along with Lewis Hall's eventual permanent switch became official.

Newcastle, undoubtedly, have their work cut out to land Olise this summer given the aforementioned competition but are certainly showing their intent. This, in a position where an upgrade would take the team's attacking capabilities to another level.

Bryan Mbeumo, Pedro Neto, Jarrod Bowen and others have been linked with a move to the north east at different stages in recent months but a move for Olise would surely trump all others.

Newcastle may not be able to match the spending power of Manchester City, or the history of Manchester United, or the London pull that Chelsea hold, or the Champions League prospects of Bayern Munich. They can, however, offer Olise the chance to be a key man, rather than a squad player, and will surely present Anthony Gordon as the perfect example of what can happen when you choose to take a chance on Howe's side.

One thing is clear, pushing for Olise's signature shows there is an appetite to strengthen at right-wing on Tyneside and offers an exciting view at what may be possible in the transfer market.
