Michael Palin says he can still hear late wife talking to him
The Monty Python star lost wife Helen in May
What did you miss?
Michael Palin has said he still hears his late wife’s voice.
The Monty Python star’s wife Helen died of kidney failure earlier this year after being ill for some time.
The couple had been married for 57 years and when Helen passed away Palin said it was “an indescribable loss”.
What, how, and why?
Asked how he was doing during an appearance on ITV’s Lorraine, the 80-year-old star said he was “okay” but that life would never be the same.
He went on: “I hear her voice all the time saying, ‘Get on with it, don’t mope about, don’t look gloomy.’
“Of course life will never be the same without her.
“I’ll remember her and she’ll be sort of be in my mind and by my side for the rest of my life.”
Palin told host Lorraine Kelly that Helen – mother to their three children – would be telling him: “You get on with it.”
He went on: “But the real problem is, you know, the great thing about knowing someone for six decades is not what you talk about all the time, it’s what you don’t need to talk about, little things, just a glance, and I can’t share that with anybody else.”
The star said that Helen was quite ill and that her life of independence was gone.
“She didn’t want to live being sort of guided around,” he said.
What has Palin said before?
When Helen died in May, Palin released a statement on his website that said: “My dearest wife Helen died peacefully in the early hours of Tuesday morning. She had been suffering with chronic pain for several years, which was compounded a few years ago by a diagnosis of kidney failure.
"We first met on a summer holiday on the Suffolk coast when we were both 16 and we married in our early twenties. Two-and-a-half weeks ago we celebrated our 57th wedding anniversary.
"Her death is an indescribable loss for myself, our three children and four grandchildren. Helen was the bedrock of my life. Her quietly wise judgment informed all my decisions and her humour and practical good sense was at the heart of our life together.”
