Migrant mother reunited with her seven year-old son after being separated for a month at US border

A migrant mother and child who were separated after crossing the US border were finally reunited on Friday after a month apart.

Beata Mariana de Jesus Mejia-Mejia and her seven-year-old son, Darwin, entered the US a month ago following an arduous trek from Guatemala.

Two days later, the boy was taken away from his mother, who had applied for political asylum soon after crossing the border.

The US Justice Department on Thursday agreed to release the boy after Mejia-Mejia sued the government in order to be reunited with him.

The mother's legal action was financed by the Libre by Nexus organisation.

The boy was one of thousands of young migrants who have been separated from their families at the US border in a controversial policy enforced in recent weeks by the Trump administration. The US President signed an executive order to end the separations this week.
