Mile-wide asteroid headed towards Earth in time for Christmas

Newsweek is reporting that an asteroid measuring roughly a mile wide is on its way to our neck of the solar system.

Known as 2003 SD220, the massive space rock will pass Earth on December 22nd.

The good news is that it's expected to fly past the planet without incident.

If an asteroid of that size were to hit Earth, the effects would be devastating and would include massive destruction at the impact site and drastic changes to the climate.

Perhaps it might be worth asking Santa for a near-miss if you're still drafting your letter.
