Residents living near Millwall Football club claim they are being kept awake until 3am by ongoing work at the training ground.

The noise is reportedly being produced by machinery which is being used for a pitch installation at the site on Calmont Road.

According to residents Andy, 46, and Stella Garfield, 49, the machinery operates from 7am until the early morning hours of the morning most days of the week.

Stella told the News Shopper: “We feel so angry. We have kids and a lot of houses on this street do. It is very frustrating.

“My son was saying how hot it was in the room and he could not sleep but he could not open the window because of the noise.

“It's constant. It stops bit a bit then it goes on again and wake you up”.

The pair claim that they have been in discussions with neighbours who also agree that the noise is interrupting their sleep and overall quality of life.

Stella, who has lived in her home with her husband for 10 years, described the noise as so intense that it often felt similar to being in a factory.

The work has been going on for more than a week and Andy and Stella say they expect it to continue for another fortnight.

The couple said that neighbours had also expressed their frustrations to the football club, insisting on a reduction of working hours - but a worker on site reportedly said that they had no intentions to modify their current schedule.

Andy reported the noise to Lewisham Council, he claims via the official routes and also by contacting a councillor, but he is concerned that the standard seven to 10 days to investigate is not quick enough as by the time it is looked into, the work will more or less be done anyway.

Stella added: “We have a very strong community. We’re trying to build a community where people love where they live but Millwall clearly don’t love where they live.

“We have been discussing in our community WhatsApp and they (the neighbours) have spoken to the workers on site, and we have too.

“They basically said ‘we have got a contract to do and by the time you go to the council, it will be too late anyway’”

A Lewisham council spokesperson said: “The Council will investigate this matter if raised through our reporting channels.

“Residents can report commercial noise complaints at: https://lewisham.gov.uk/myservices/environment/noise/noise-and-other-disturbances-from-commercial-premises.”

Millwall Football Club declined to comment.
