Considering its first season centred on serial killers such as the Wichita Strangler and Ed 'Co-ed Killer' Kemper, as well as the pioneering FBI agents behind criminal profiling, it's no surprise that Mindhunter's long-awaited second season doubles down on the darkness.

Now, Jonathan Groff – who plays Agent Holden Ford in the David Fincher-directed Netflix series – has opened up about which scenes from the new episodes were the most difficult to film.

"Speaking to the mothers of the Atlanta child murders was pretty heartbreaking," he told Collider in a recent interview.

He continued: "This season you're really getting to see the victim's side of the story in a way you didn't, necessarily, in the first season. So that was really intense.

"In the first season, everyone would always ask us, 'Is it hard to go to sleep at night? Do you get demons...?' I never had anything like that, but I definitely do remember on the day with the mothers, when they were crying – these amazing actresses – that was the day that stuck with me the most."

While it offers up glimpses of notorious criminals like Kemper, Dennis 'BTK Killer' Rader and Charles Manson, Mindhunter's second season predominately focuses on the 28 child murders carried out in Georgia between 1979 and 1981.

In the series, Ford and his partner Bill Tench (Holt McCallany) are sent from Quantico, Virginia to Atlanta to help solve the case, when it's suspected it could be the actions of a serial killer.

"For me, it was definitely the tension that's created in Bill's life, because he's being pulled in two different directions between [his] responsibilities as a husband and a father, and also [his] professional responsibilities," McCallany said.

Mindhunter season two is now available to stream on Netflix, along with Mindhunter season one.
