Misbah puts blame on poor bowling for Asia Cup final failure

Pakistan captain Misbah-ul Haq cited poor bowling as the main reason behind his team’s inability to put any pressure on Sri Lanka’s batsmen.

Only Saeed Ajmal posed a threat, as Pakistan looked to defend a fighting total.

Ajmal took 3-26 in 10 overs, but apart from him and Mohammad Hafeez, the rest of the attack comprising of Umar Gul, Junaid Khan, Mohammad Talha and Shahid Afridi proved ineffective.

“They were just consuming his [Ajmal’s] overs, just blocking him,” Misbah said. “I thought I would take a chance with someone else, to get the wicket. But I think it was a bad day for all the bowlers. They couldn’t really put pressure, and you can’t winmatches with just one bowler. You need to bowl well as a unit.”

Misbah said the bowlers need to perform as a unit.

“We sought early breakthroughs which Saeed Ajmal finally provided us. Bowling too requires partnerships but none of the bowlers could build that sort of pressure on the batsmen.”

After the win, Sri Lanka captain Angelo Mathews said he was relieved to win a final, with Sri Lanka having lost the 2007 and 2011 World Cup and 2009 and 2012 World T20 title clashes.

“We wanted to break the barrier between us and the finals and credit goes to the whole team. A big victory not only for me, but for the whole team as we haven’t won a major tournament for a while.”
